One of the cool new features of PowerPoint 2010 is the ability for you to broadcast your presentation over the Internet for remote or networked viewers. This allows you to show presentations even if there is no projector available.
You can use this feature with either a Live account for free or if you have SharePoint available on the network you can broadcast from there as well. To do this, simply open the presentation in PowerPoint 2010 and go to the Slide Show ribbon. Select the Broadcast Slide Show button there.
This will bring up a dialog box asking whether you wish to use PowerPoint Live or other (for SharePoint).
Choose the first to use the free Live services. You will be prompted for your Live username and password. After validating your login, the presentation will be prepared for broadcast and sent to the service.
Finally, you will get a link that you can send to your participants for viewing.
Once you send the link and have verified that all the participants are connected, you can click the Start Slide Show button to proceed.
For the users, once they connect to the URL given to them using a browser they will see the slides as you go through them. It works fine in both Internet Explorer and FireFox. I didn’t try any other browser but I assume it would work there too.
You can even stop the broadcast and return to it using the special contextual Broadcast ribbon that lets you control many different aspects of the broadcast in progress.
Animations work well in the browsers as well – even on Firefox. As you can see in the pic below the Fly In works fine. However I was unable to get Transitions (between slides) to show up correctly in any browser. The only transition supported (for now) seems to be Fade –in.
Other than this small thing, the Broadcast feature works just great. No need to carry a projector or anything as long as everyone has a machine and Internet to connect to!
